As allergy season approaches, millions of Americans brace themselves for months of sneezing, congestion, fatigue, skin reactions, and reliance on medications that often manage symptoms without addressing the underlying issue. For some, the problem goes far beyond seasonal pollen. Food sensitivities, chemical reactions, and increasingly common immune conditions such as Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) can make everyday life unpredictable and exhausting.
What many people don’t realize is that there is a highly specific acupuncture treatment protocol that directly targets allergic responses—and in many cases does so in a single treatment. It’s called Soliman Auricular Allergy Treatment, or SAAT.
I have been practicing acupuncture in Wisconsin since 2014 and have administered a vast number of SAAT treatments in my clinic, 7 Stones Acupuncture and Wellness. Each year, especially as allergy season returns, I meet people who have tried everything—antihistamines, nasal sprays, dietary elimination, air purifiers—without lasting relief. Many are surprised to learn that acupuncture can address allergies at all, let alone in such a targeted way.
What Makes SAAT Different?
SAAT is not “acupuncture for allergies” in a general sense. It is a precise, standardized medical protocol that uses the ear (auricular acupuncture) to communicate directly with the nervous and immune systems.
Developed by Dr. Nader Soliman, SAAT is based on the understanding that allergic reactions are not simply exposures to substances, but miscommunications within the body’s immune response. In simple terms, the immune system mistakenly identifies a harmless substance—such as pollen, dust, or certain foods—as a threat and reacts accordingly.
SAAT works by helping the body recalibrate that response.
During treatment, a very small, sterile stainless steel acupuncture needle is placed for 3 weeks at a specific point on the ear that corresponds to immune regulation. Once the body has registered the correction, the needle is removed. For many common allergies, this is a one-time treatment.
What Conditions Can SAAT Address?
In my clinical experience, SAAT has been effective for a wide range of sensitivities, including:
- Environmental allergies (pollen, grasses, dust, mold)
- Food sensitivities
- Chemical sensitivities
- Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS)
If an allergy is not completely resolved, patients typically experience an improvement of approximately 85%, which can still be life-changing for someone who has struggled for years.
Understanding MCAS
MCAS is a condition that remains unfamiliar to much of the public, yet it may affect far more people than currently diagnosed. Individuals with MCAS can experience reactions to foods, environmental triggers, temperature changes, stress, or even fragrances. Symptoms may include flushing, digestive distress, headaches, fatigue, skin reactions, and respiratory issues.
Because MCAS symptoms overlap with many other conditions, it is often misunderstood or overlooked.
In cases where MCAS is present, SAAT is used first to deactivate the mast cell over-response before addressing individual allergens. While reactivation can occur after major immune stressors—such as significant mold exposure or viral infections—repeat SAAT treatment has been effective in restoring stability when needed.
Safety and Individual Considerations
SAAT is a stand-alone treatment and does not require dietary changes, supplements, or lifestyle modification to be effective. In rare cases where a patient has a stainless-steel sensitivity, alternative methods can be used to ensure the treatment remains accessible and safe.
As with any medical approach, not every treatment is appropriate for every person, but proper evaluation ensures that SAAT is applied responsibly and effectively.
Why Isn’t This More Widely Known?
Despite being practiced internationally, SAAT remains relatively unknown in the United States. Many people assume acupuncture addresses pain or stress but are unaware of its capacity to regulate immune function.
As allergy season returns, awareness is key. People deserve to know that options exist beyond long-term medication use and symptom management.
Looking Ahead
For individuals who feel resigned to living with allergies—or who suspect their symptoms may be something more complex—education is often the first step toward relief.
